More Calls for Police IG, Homeland Minister to be Fired

The latest crack down on peaceful demonstration has not only shocked the country, but foreign embassies and organisations who have called on president Chakwera to take a stern action against those connected to the violence when panga armed and masked raffians fooled demonstrations and hacked Sylvester Namiwa several times

The demonstration was aimed at demanding the resignation of both MEC chairperson Annabel Ntalimanja and Chief Election Officer Andrew Mpesi whose strong connection with the ruling party raises serious doubts on the credibility of elections due to be held on 16 September, 2025.

Opposition political parties were unanimous in their condemnation of what had happened and are calling for the immediate sacking of police IG Merlyne Yolamu and Homeland Minister Ezekiel Ching’oma.

Leader of Opposition in Parliament Hon George Chaponda expressed shock for inaction by police officers and MDF soldiers who were watching masked men unleashing terror and hacking Mr Sylvester Namiwa mercilessly as he was crying for help

In a video clip which went viral, Namiwa can be held pleading with the officers to come to his rescue ‘ Akulu akulu, dzikoli lafika pamenepa? Apolisi mukundisiya anthu awa apange nane zimene akufuna? Ndithandizeni? ” He lamented.
“Has this country really come to this? Officers are you just watching these criminals do whatever they want to me? Help me.

Meanwhile, European Union ambassador to Malawi, Rune Skinnebach has threatened to withdraw support for police training in Malawi following the incident.

Donor Community Joint Statement Condemning Chakwera’s Government for Suppressing Protesters’ Rights

The US, UK and other donor community members have expressed shock following the barbaric attacks on peaceful protesters which included human rights activists, local and international journalists and passersby were subjected too in Lilongwe and other places by thugs. In a joint statement by the UK and other heads of mission, has challenged President Dr Lazarus Chakwera and his government to respect the human rights and rule of law, defend them and that it must conduct an investigation into the matter soon. But the US embassy through its head of mission, Charge’ d’effairs in Malawi says Amy Diaz says that she is “sickened” by the attacks carried out by a group of armed assailants. Diaz has expressed deep concern over the blatant disregard by both the Police and Army to protect the protesters. “What was particularly appalling was the failure of the Malawi Police Service and Malawi Defence Force to carry out their duties to protect their fellow citizens,” she said while adding that the fundamental duty of government is to ensure that citizens’ rights are protected.

EU Contemplating Withholding Financial and Material Support for Malawi Police

The European Union ( EU) has disclosed that it is contemplating withholding financial and material support for police training following the violent attacks on peaceful protesters in Lilongwe yesterday, EU Ambassador to Malawi, Rune Skinnebach has disclosed. “I was shocked and disgusted to see the people we train failing to defend the rights of their fellow citizens from sponsored thugs. We have been giving training support for police and time has come to think twice because the situation has crossed the red line,” he said. The Malawi Congress Party has a 31 year old record of undemocratic tendences and committing of atrocities against innocent Malawians for political reasons and this was the reason why it was kicked out of government in 1994.

MLS Pens Chakwera to Fire, Ezekiel Ching’oma, Merliyn Yolamu; Democracy Gone to the Dogs

The Malawi Law Society (MLS) has written President Dr Lazarus Chakwera to fire the Minister of Homeland Security Ezekiel Ching’oma and Inspector General of Police, Merlin Yolamu for dereliction of duty after the Police and Army failed to defend the constitution when thugs when on rampage beating peaceful protesters, burning cars and beating reporters who were covered the events. In the Press Statement that has been signed by the watchdog’s President, Davis Mthakati Njobvu and Francis Ekari M’mame, the honorary Secretary says that two failed in their constitutional duties as provided for in Section 153 (4) of the Constitution, where it states that the Minister is responsible for ensuring the discipline and conduct of the Malawi Police Service accords with the prescriptions of the Constitution – a responsibility which the Minister of Homeland Security has demonstrably failed to uphold. The Society has also called for the President to relieve Madam Yolamu of her duties for failing to uphold powers of command, superintendence and direction that are bestowed in the office of the Inspector General under Section 7 of the Police Act and that President has under sections 154 (4) (a) and (b) of the Constitution which respectively allow for the removal of the Inspector General of Police on account of incompetence of compromised impartiality. The Society has also reminded President Dr Lazarus Chakwera that all those that exercise State power, including its agencies, that under Section 12 of the Constitution, derive from the people of Malawi on sustained trust. The Society has since condemned the violence that marred the peaceful protests by panga- welding individuals, leaving some of the organizers and participants injured or maimed and since demanded the arrest of those who assaulted the protesters. Other groups that have called for the resignation of two are the Public Affairs Committee and UTM President Dr Dalitso Kabambe.
