Chakwera Invited to Attend Youth Council Indaba Amidst Job Scarcity

National Youth Council of Malawi(Nycom) will hold its second National youth Summit from 2nd to 4th July this year where President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has been invited to be the Guest of Honour.

The event will be held at Bingu International Conference Center in the Capital Lilongwe. This was said during a press briefing in Lilongwe by NYCOM Executive Director Rex Chapota.

Among other things, Chapota indicated that this years summit will tackle more issues especially on ATM strategy which includes Agriculture, Tourism and Mining.

He has also added that peace will be preached at the summit as the country prepares for the general elections on September 16, this year. However, Chapota has also emphasized the need for partners to come and be part of the initiative.

This years summit will be held under the theme “Harnessing Youth Innovation for Economic Empowerment and Sustainable Job Creation”.

This year’s summit will be held amidst high unemployment rate for the youth who make over 50% of the total population, most of which are usually used for political violence instead.

Quality Health Service Delivery Registered at Biwi Health Centre in Lilongwe

Minister of Health, Khumbidze Kandodo Chiponda has expressed satisfaction with the commitment and quality health service delivery that Biwi Health Centre in Lilongwe is providing to the general community. Chiponda made the remarks on Tuesday, when she made a surprise visit to the health facility and found that they have already successfully vaccinated over 6,000 children against measles, against their initial target of 9,500 children. The Minister stated that for a country to succeed in delivering healthcare services, it needs dedicated and goal-oriented workers. ”The measles campaign was launched last month, and within two days, this center managed to vaccinate 6, 000 children. This only demonstrates commitment, good planning, and strong relationship with the community that this center has and a testament to the hard work of these healthcare workers,” she said. Chiponda urged mothers and guardians to bring their children for vaccination, as the government aims to eliminate the disease from the country. Biwi Health Centre Clinical Officer In-Charge, Ella Khaiya Lungu, thanked the Minister for visiting the facility saying they have succeeded in the campaign because of good planning. “We informed the community about the importance of the vaccine before it arrived, so the people were ready to bring their children for vaccination since they already knew how important the vaccine was for their children’s health,” she said. Malawi has since reported 683 measles cases since October 2024 and is conducting a five day vaccination campaign in six districts, namely: Nkhotakota, Salima, Ntcheu, Mangochi, Blantyre and Lilongwe.

Police Officer Commits Suicide in Dedza; Cases on the Rise in Malawi

Constable Eric Chasweka of Dedza police station has committed suicide by hanging himself to the roof of his house. He was discovered by his colleagues after noting that had been missing for some time. He has left 3 suicide notes, one for his boss, OC, another going to his mother and the last one going to his girlfriend. The reasons for taking his own life is not yet known. Meanwhile, 153 people, mostly men, have killed themselves from January to March 2025 alone. This is attributed to a volatile economic environment. Malawi Police Service statistics have indicated that suicide cases continue to rise in Malawi with figures from the first quarter of 2025 surpassing those of the corresponding period in 2024. Reports indicate that according to the World Health Organization (WHO) suicide is attributed to a public health problem that requires a public health response. Police statistics show that out of 153 suicide cases reported this year, 125 were males while 28 only involved females while during the same period last year, 126 suicide cases were reported with 109 involving males while 17 involved females. Overall suicide cases continue to rise with more males largely committing the vice as compared to females. National Police spokesperson Harry Namwaza observed that most affected age group is between 20 and 39 years, with 61 males and 15 females in this age bracket committing suicide in this year’s first quarter.

MEC Chairperson Resignation Information, Fake

In a Press Release seen by Khulubvi Post, the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) is informing the public and all stakeholders that a message currently circulating on social media and other platforms, alleging that the MEC Chairperson, Justice Annabel Mtalimanja, has resigned, is completely false and should be disregarded in its entirety. The Director of Media and Public Relations, Sangwani Mwafulirwa categorically states that the Malawi Electoral Commission MEC Chairperson remains fully committed to her role and continues to discharge her duties in line with her constitutional mandate. There has been no resignation, and no such development has occurred within the Commission. The Commission strongly urges members of the public and all electoral stakeholders to desist from fabricating, sharing, or amplifying false information, especially during this crucial period of electoral preparations. He further says that the dissemination of fake news not only misleads the public but also undermines confidence in the electoral process and the integrity of democratic institutions. MEC encourages all recipients of this message to verify any election-related information through official MEC communication channels, including our website, press statements, and verified social media accounts.

CDEDI Calls for the Dismissal of Chief of Staff, Kampondamgaga

The Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) is calling on President Lazarus Chakwera to suspend State House Chief of Staff Prince Kapondamgaga until he proves his innocence in a corruption case involving Zuneth Sattar. This is contained in a letter which has been signed by CDEDI Executive Director Sylvester Namiwa, and has been addressed to President Lazarus Chakwera. In a letter, Namiwa has expressed serious concerns regarding Kapondamgaga’s alleged involvement in a bribery scandal connected to UK businessman Zuneth Sattar. This comes as the UK’s Westminster Magistrates’ Court is currently hearing a case in which Kapondamgaga is accused of accepting a bribe from Sattar. According to Namiwa, the President’s ongoing association with Kapondamgaga undermines his commitment to combating corruption and raises doubts about his dedication to accountability. Additionally, CDEDI is questioning why Kapondamgaga has not been arrested, especially after he returned a Mercedes Benz S-Class 350d and K70,150,670, which were mentioned by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in a letter responding to Youth and Society (YAS). Namiwa has further stated that Kapondamgaga’s role as State House Chief of Staff represents a public trust, and his alleged corruption jeopardizes the integrity of that position. In this regard, he has urged President Chakwera to prioritize the fight against corruption by removing Kapondamgaga from office until his name is cleared.
