The National Children’s Commission (NCC) has raised alarm over the increasing exploitation and endangerment of children during electoral activities, warning political stakeholders to prioritize children’s rights and protection as the 2025 elections approach. Speaking at a press briefing in Lilongwe, NCC Vice Chairperson Commissioner Benedicto Kondowe emphasised that the Commission, established under the 2019 Act of Parliament, has the legal mandate to hold duty bearers accountable. “Children are not tools, they are citizens,” he stressed, citing constitutional and international instruments that safeguard children’s rights. The NCC called for formal child protection protocols within political parties, child-focused desks in electoral bodies, and the deployment of trained child rights observers. It also advocated for the implementation of the Malawi Children’s Manifesto to guide future policy. While systematic documentation is underway, Kondowe acknowledged various reports of violations shared through social media.
