High Court Justice Grants an Interlocutory Injection to Chimulirenji

Lilongwe High Court Justice, Halord Pemba has granted an interlocutory injection to 2019 Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika running mate, Everton Chimulirenji, restraining the Democratic Progressive Party-DPP from conducting another primary elections in Ntcheu North West constituency.

This follows the order by the party politburo to nullify the primary elections results citing “very serious irregularities that may have stained the polling results” against former MEC Chairperson, Justice Dr Jane Ansah SC, Justice of Appeal Emeritus.

The DPP conducted primaries for the constituency on April 12, 2025, in which Chimulirenji was declared the winner.

But it transpired that Jane Ansah lodged a series of accusations against him to the party and the party decided to have a rematch and went on to nullify the outcome of the polls. The party through, Jean Mathanga, who is the Director of Elections announced that the re-run will happen on June, 11, 2025.

This didn’t go down well with Chimulirenji who through his lawyers, Chimowa and Company decided to get an injunction stopping the party from conducting primary elections again.

SOS Over Increasing Exploitation and Endangerment of Children during Electoral Activities

The National Children’s Commission (NCC) has raised alarm over the increasing exploitation and endangerment of children during electoral activities, warning political stakeholders to prioritize children’s rights and protection as the 2025 elections approach. Speaking at a press briefing in Lilongwe, NCC Vice Chairperson Commissioner Benedicto Kondowe emphasised that the Commission, established under the 2019 Act of Parliament, has the legal mandate to hold duty bearers accountable. “Children are not tools, they are citizens,” he stressed, citing constitutional and international instruments that safeguard children’s rights. The NCC called for formal child protection protocols within political parties, child-focused desks in electoral bodies, and the deployment of trained child rights observers. It also advocated for the implementation of the Malawi Children’s Manifesto to guide future policy. While systematic documentation is underway, Kondowe acknowledged various reports of violations shared through social media. He reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to monitoring, reporting, and taking action where necessary. “Our goal is a Malawi where children are safe, respected, and empowered,” he concluded. “Child protection is not optional, it’s our legal and moral duty.” he said
